This image of Portage Glacier, between Anchorage and Seward, was taken about 15 years ago. At that time, the tongue of the glacier reached the lake, and small icebergs calved into the lake. Finely ground rock (called rock flour) -created by the glacier's movement over rock - stays suspended in the water, giving it a gray look. Compare this image with Portage Glacier 4, which was taken last year, and you will see the impact of global warming.
