Assateague Light, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, was built in 1867. 142 feet tall, it is one of the tallest lighthoues on Chesapeake Bay. Distinctive alternating red and white bands make this lighthoue easily identifiable. Assateague, and it's "sister" island Chincoteague, are famous for the wild ponies that roam freely there.
